Maple Kindergarten Visit to the Horniman Museum

Maple Kindergarten recently took a trip to the Horniman Museum following the children’s growing interest in the cavemen era and how people lived in the past.

This interest had developed through our Forest School sessions, where the children have been building dens and different types of shelters, exploring natural materials, pretending to make fires, and talking about how people might have survived in different weather conditions. They have also enjoyed learning about foraging, discussing which foods are safe to eat and how people could find food in the natural environment.

During our visit, we explored the museum’s displays connected to early humans and discovered some fascinating examples of the tools and equipment people used for hunting, fishing, finding food and surviving in their environments. The children were particularly fascinated by the large display of weapons, fishing equipment and useful tools from different cultures and parts of the world, making lots of connections to their own Forest School experiences.

As we explored further, the children’s curiosity led us beyond our original cavemen topic. They became interested in many different objects, cultures and periods throughout the museum, asking questions, sharing ideas and making their own observations.

It was wonderful to see how their Forest School experiences sparked curiosity beyond the forest and encouraged the children to think about how people lived, explored, found food and adapted to the world around them.
